Hi
As above, can you machine polish metallic paint? will it respond in the same way as lacquered paint? I've been asked to machine polish an 7 year old volvo and I'm unsure what compounds to use that will give me good correction results and quickly.

would be grateful for any answers.

Not everything is as straight forward as that. The reason I asked was because in the past I've tried to remove a scratch from a volvo c30 using r6 which is Autosmart's most abrasive cutting compound and that did absolutely nothing. so after that it got me wondering if when painted they use a different method/products that make the paint so hard.

Apologies that i wasn't very clear.

Single stage mettalic mmmmmm thats a spraycan job then.
Otherwise yes it is base and clear so machine it as normal
Or do you ean UNclear coated metaslic in which case NO you will just rip the met flake awa
R6 should have taken the paint to bate metal.
Either the wrong technique here or more than likely the wrong pad combo?
Volvos are hard but not as hard as some out there.

I was using a standard hard pad that they use in body shops. there white bout 2'' thick and just screw straight on the the rotary. no backing plate. it was definitely a hard pad. A mate of mine who does smart repairs had a go at trying to take the scratch out with the r6 i was using and the pad and he couldn't. left him felling slightly baffled too.

Ah ok. So metallic will be lacquered. The flake is in the lacquer usually. However different manufacturers use different paint systems, some harder than others. A few after market paints are VERY hard in deed. Could it possibly be the mark was below the clear, in the base coat, meaning that your machine wasn't actually polishing it at all, but the clear above it?
