which hoover would you all recommend? i want something smallish and lightish to give the carpets a good seeing to. My current hoover never seem able to remove the bits that get stuck in the pile.

We've got a Henry & a Dyson and neither, in my experience, get the bits in the pile without a bit of agitation with a brush first and/or whilst vacuuming.
The bits aren't necessarily just laying in the pile, they're sort of stuck under a loop of material that makes up the pile and the vacuum is just pulling the debris up tight but it can't free itself from the loop
I would never own a non-dyson again, expensive but very good, masses spend on design to make them functional & simple (and cheap to manufacture!).
After having finished vacuuming my whole (small) flat I was not happy with the results so went and bought a dyson upright, When I redid the living room, bedroom and lobby I managed to fill it!
+1 for Dyson or Henry....tough to go wrong with either although arguably the Dyson may have more "round the house" uses if its a general hoover and not one exclusivley for the car.
Dyson do a cracking hand held jobbie as well that if you had the cash and some proper OCD tendancies you could keep charged in the car
We have the newest dyson upright and whilst its great for the house its not so good for the car...only because there is chance of it falling over onto the car.
kinda wish we got the compact dyson now!
The little drag along Dyson would be great for the car duties.
Stiff bristled brush before hand should solve all your problems rather then spending a few hundred on a Hoover to find your no better off :thumb:
If you really want a Hoover then a dyson(any pet one) the pet ones come with brushes that spin on the carpet as you go to pull out dog hair but also work well on car mats .
Miele or Bosch for me. Both have superlative suction over anything else I've used...
