Issue applying EXO v5

Hi,

Recently had my car re-painted (has been well over 3 months ago since car was painted) and therefore needed to re-apply a ceramic coating to the whole thing. Had used CSL and one of the previous versions of EXO before (possibly v3) so went with this option again.

Applied the CSL no problem at all. EXO is proving to be a bit of a nightmare and has already pretty much ruined the finish on the whole bonnet. Im following the application guide and the adivce of the million youtube videos ive watched on how to apply to see if im doing anything wrong but at this point completely stumped. I've tried applying in smaller areas. Leveling the residue after flash off with one towel, lightly buffing with another and then going over with a 3rd. Ive tried leaving it to flash off longer. I've tried using less product. Tried using more pressure when buffing which just made it worse and actually marked the paintwork.

Im not sure how exactly to describe the marks its leaving but its like very fine holograms. When you move a bright white light across the panel you can see all these fine marks that werent there before.

Ive included a before and after picture. The before you can see there are zero issues with the paintwork where as after you can notice the marks eminating from either side of the light. Doesnt look much in the photo but when you move that light across the panel, it looks horrendous.

At this point ive given up with it. The whole bonnet is going to need compounding again to remove it all. I literally have no idea what im doing wrong given that i had zero issues with CSL.

Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

Yeah the paint was fully corrected before. Wasnt a single mark on the paintwork.

  • paint corrected
  • IPA wipe down
  • Apply CSL (paintwork still in perfect condition)
  • leave for a couple hours
  • Apply a layer of exo (only did the bonnet and tiny bit of the front bumper before i gave up with it as everywhere i applied it, looked like the after picture)

EXO is a pretty rough product. It has a rough finish. Reason being is that ceramic coatings sweat. They sweat out water (e.g. rain) so it doesn’t penetrate the surface and embed dirt beneath. EXO turns this up a notch by plugging more holes and making it even more difficult for water to sweat out. As it can hardly get through in the first place. The finish with EXO will be a little rough and not look glass smooth.

That finish looks like it has some streaks to it. My guess is 1 of 2 or both of the following:
1. Insufficient cure time. Personally, I would have left it 18-20 hrs before applying EXO.
2. Poor/Faulty application. The application media (e.g. pad) may have been contaminated. Even minor contamination could introduce unexpected and unnecessary scratches/scuffs to CSL. This could also include being parsimonious with the product.

Was leaving it for about a minute and half. It looked like it had flashed off but honestly at this point i feel pretty lost with it.
I tried a small area again today and same problem so ive given up with it. I dont feel confident i know what im doing with it now.

Can anyone recommend another, better product to top CSL with instead?

Sorry to hear that, I was going to ask what microfibres and coating applicators you're using, and that you used fresh towels for the Exo application.

The fact that a well regarded pro above has had issues with it too, would indicate it might be worth a call to Gtechniq to get to the bottom of.

I found V4 to be a pretty average product but the user experience was great in all fairness.
