The long awaited successor to the GT86 is here which will go on sale in the Autumn. This lightweight rear-wheel driven four seater will also join the new second generation Subaru BRZ in which it's another joint development by the two companies. This new GR86 will use a new version of Subaru's horizontally opposed 2.4 litre four cylinder turbo petrol unit with 232 BHP and 184 Lb of torque, up from 197 BHP and 151 Lb of torque from the previous model. 0-60 is timed at 6.3 seconds which is 1.1 seconds quicker than it's predecessor. Toyota's main focus is on improving driver interaction with the car and a key part of it is it's 1270 Kg kerb weight which is five Kg lighter than the old model and it's been achieved through the use of aluminium roof and body panels. The torsional rigidity of the new model has been increased by around 50 percent for even sharper handling and steering. The new model also has aerodynamic front air ducts and side panels, which Toyota says are based on learnings from it's motorsport programmes. Inside, the GR86 will feature a seven inch touchscreen that forms part of a driver focused dashboard design. The name change from GT86 to GR86 bring the coupe in line with the rest of Toyota's GR performance line up.

I've been a fan of these since they launched some years ago. Driving one (for a very very short drive) left me underwhelmed at the lack of power. Yes, cliche I know!

That said, we have to be appreciative that Toyota are still throwing dev money at a full blown petrol engine. The looks are quite modern and almost cute. Its a yes from me (turbo charger required though)!
