Well back in 21 we moved house, a nicer area, bigger place and a huge garden, this meant I had space to build a nice man cave.

It wasn’t all plain sailing as the house was built in a conservation area and with a lot of old trees in the rear of others gardens, meant planning was hard to get and various things had to be altered.

First off we had an old tree in the back garden that had to come down, we wanted the garage at the rear of the garden to start with but some trees had protection orders so that wasn’t to be.

Garden as it started, very bleak and bare, not even any grass.

Image

Started all from seed.
Image

Soon started to grow in lines sadly

Image

After coming home from work one evening to see it’s started, trees been removed and the digging started for the footings
Image

Time to get a bit of mechanical help
Image

Slowly but surely all dug out for the footings. Well this didn’t go to plan, we employed a tree geek and his calculated where the build had to go, sadly once all dug out the building control didnt like the fine roots and decided it had to be done as a floating slab, well that instantly added to the costs.

Image

in the meantime decided to add a shed, keeps the crap out the garage right?
Image

Reinforced floating slab went down, think this was a Saturday, only do half days so it was still light, could finally see the weeks work.
Image

Good footprint

Image

once the slab was down it started to happen quite quick

Just watch out if the start building a wicker man 😳

in seriousness if that wheat or barley they often use a shotgun type scarecrow that goes ‘bang’ every half hour or so and can get annoying- my wife’s uncles one set fire to a portion of one of his fields before he managed to tackle the blaze last year after a few weeks of baking heat !

A few more updates, roof timbers all done and the start of the dormer windows
Image

Image

Mud and crap everywhere. Only downside to a new build, also explains why a new build can’t get great grass.
Image

The pattern put into the brickwork to match the house. Nice touch

Window work all going on, some craftsmanship

Tiles now on

A few internal photos, all blockwork boarded to be plastered, the two lumps in the middle are the steels, also the upstairs has a shower room and toilet so the waste pipe is also boarded on the ceiling.

plastered
Image

starting to look good, electrician also been in and did a first fix
Image

Image

Upstairs, not really decided what we will do with this space as yet, but it has a shower room and toilet, the amount of insulation you have to do now is massive so it has narrowed the walls somewhat.
Image

Down stairs toilet, this is accessible without going into the garage so saves people being nosy who need a pee. 😂

A few updates for you.

Image

Windows got there lead fitted, we had to wait for this, also didn’t realise it was an extra cost but looks great. Standard was meant to be slate, think we choose the better option?

Image

With all the insulation, it makes them look smaller than we first thought, not sure what to do with the upstairs to be honest. Sure we will think of something.
Image

The up stairs rooms got boarded out

Image

With the sun out decided to have a beer and watch the boy work…… only kidding he just wanted to mess with the leaf blower after I had finished with it and all the garden work

Image

Image

Finally the scaffolding came down, time to get some bits cleaned up, looks like a builders yard 😂

Image

Also celebrated the coronation with a few friends, opposite side of the garden in my man shed.

Believe it or not the cheapest way to heat the garage was with a/c, that was duly fitted, also the room got plastered

Image

Did expect the machine to be high up on the wall but it’s at ground level, give me something to crash into I suppose.😂

Image

We then got the finishing touch, windows and doors in the correct colour that match the house, had to have these painted.

it’s now all happening with the floor, gone for epoxy and flake system, will update you all soon.

thanks for looking.

Moving to a new house with a bigger place and a huge garden sounds fantastic! I can imagine how challenging it must have been to navigate the planning process with the conservation area and the old trees. Taking down the tree in your back garden was probably a tough decision, but sometimes it's necessary for progress. But perhaps in your situation you should not just make radical decisions, but also consult with an international estate agency. I think they can find a solution for this situation.

It's a shame you couldn't have the garage at the rear due to the protected trees, but I'm sure you found a great alternative. Starting with a bleak and bare garden might have seemed daunting, but I'm curious to know how it looks now.

Having a big garden is a blessing and a curse, think painting a bridge or lighthouse, by the time you've finished you need to start again, larger gardens are like that with weeds :ROFLMAO:

Add to that being surrounded by sycamore trees and several times a year you're pulling tree seedlings out the borders / driveway etc.

Yes definitely, the garden is great but you have to have the time to look after it, the wife likes to look after the plants, my job is to cut the grass, strI’m the edges etc, when it gets too much we get a local guy to do some weeding but it’s full on, especially with the wet warm weather we are having at the minute.

Currently sat outside in the bbq area writing this with the fire on, whether one minute is dry the Next it chucks it down. Had to stop the birds nesting in here and the lights have took a bombing from the birds, spent my detailing skills stripping the lamps and cleaning them.

The glass has gone really cloudy had to use to da and cutting compound, look load’s better now but was some effort.

Back to the garage, things have been happening but as you can imagine the funds take a knock and there is always the unexpected costs that don’t get accounted for that get in the way.

The garage door company fitted the wrong colour doors, they was meant to match the existing ones on the house but somehow didn’t seem to notice they were dark grey not black, as you can imagine we paid up front so nothing ever got sorted right down to not getting any remote control to operate the doors, eventually after I left some poor feed back we got one key but regards the colour there was nothing they could do! To be fair they are not next to the other doors so it shouldnt really get noticed.

The garage floor was done and I went for an epoxy flake system, for some reason it was all laid and it never really cured, the floor was sticky even weeks after it was laid, then it all looked patchy.

The company I used have done a fair few floors for me and never had the issue before, I had other things to do and left it at least three weeks, he came back and sorted it which was a relief.

Image

as you can see it looks ok, but patchy and very sticky, even right up to when they re did it.
Image

Image

once we was back and ready to takle the floor again the company stuck to there word and redid it, massive improvement.

Image

Even the toilet area got the same treatment, all the skirting boards have now been refitted and some decorating has took place

Image

as you can see here much better, you can also see the bass box for the sound system in the corner, that’s another expense but I really wanted a good sound system.

Image

Upstairs got decorating and the a/c fitted. We now need to finish the bathroom to be able to get it signed off, as you can imagine a lot of the trades are really busy so a tiler isn’t available to come till august.

I did put a couple of cars in the garage last week but as the drives not done I damaged the drains at the front 😩

Overall very happy and it’s taking shape well.

Floor looks lovely now it's done Carl.

Can't wait to see it with all the toys parked in there mate.
Evening fella.

Funny you should say that, I popped a couple in the other night. Also bought some geeky Mat’s for work but there too nice to get dirty there 🤣🤣

I was thinking the mini but that’s tucked up in the house garage😂

Place is like a black canvass at the minute, thinking of a bit painting to put on the rear wall?? Something old school like the street fighter game scene.
