Take one faded Vauxhall Astra. Spend 8 hours on bringing the paint back to life. No defect correction, no interior/engine bay work. Take lots of pictures and then wash out the red on the pads/clothes!

Process

· Wheel trims cleaned with AS G101/Megs WB
· Door shuts worked with G101 and Megs SD
· Foamed with SuperSnow foam
· Washed with TBM and Gold Class/UltiMit
· Tar removed from lowers and wheels with Tardis
· Clayed with Sonus Green & Megs LastTouch
· Rewashed
· Sheeted water and dried with Miracle dryer
· Panels polished up with mix of Sonus SFX-2 and AG SRP on various PC pads
· Sealed with JetSEAL109
· Waxed with Collinite 476s
· Tyres/plastics/details dressed

Owner was very pleased. Couldn't believe the turn around.

Quite a satisfying job.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks guys.

There is a lot more that could be done to the vehicle imo. Well, the interior and engine bay need working still for a start.. but bodywork wise, I think rehittin some areas and actually working the likes of Menz FF would have refined the finish further.

Having posted this same report on my own personal website, one of my friends has come back to me with the following:

Looking back, it is a full on smiley! :) It wasn't me that noticed it, a friend on my own site. Eagle eyes!!

looks great.its strange that the bumpers and other plastics dont turn pink.anyone know why
I'd like to know this also.. probably a different laquear/clearcat/protection put on lower areas?! Meh.. saying that, the petrol filler cap had life in it still, yet the surrounding areas had faded quite badly. Something to do with plastics. :speechles:confused:

I'll have a go but i'm preparing to be shot down in flames.

The metal panels will expand/contract more than the plastic with heat/cold. This will stress the paint probably resulting in micro-cracks. These would diffuse the light hitting the paint and turning it white (faded).

The paint plastic would not be subject to the same conditions.

Or......

Vauxhall used a diffrent formulation in the paint to get it to stick to plastic.

Probably the latter me thinks.

Jim, how did you wash the pads afterwards? I am having trouble removing the paint from my pads.
After this job Elliott a few of the pads had to be 'designated red/pink pads only'. They were pretty bad..

Most of them came up OK. I fill a bowl with warm/hot water with a wash detergent in.. leave them to soak for half hour. Then with a small stiff brush, I give them a scrub so to speak, kneading and rinsing as I go. Finally, change of water, run under running tap and rinse. Leave to dry.

I've never put mine in the washing machine.. I believe some people do.. but personally, I've not tried it yet.

Thanks for comments. :thumb:

Also, most motor manufacturers will paint the bumpers seperatley to the main bodyshell.
The painted bumpers (along with a few thousand other, seperate components!) get fitted to the painted 'shell during main assembly.

This could mean that the bumpers had a clear coat applied after painting - thus preventing the oxidisation which we see on the main bodyshell, which is obviously painted with single-stage or two-pack paint.

Some cars can show a slight colour variation between the bumpers and body, this is down to the fact that they are painted seperately - and will therefore never be a perfect match due to many factors during application.
