I use Bilt Hamber clay and it needs only water as a lubricant, although car shampoo + water is an effective lubricant for clays which need something more than water. I have used QD as lubricant in the past although found a 10:1 mix of water:shampoo works just as well, and this will be safe on paint.

I clay my car every few months, although it really depends on many factors; how many miles the car covers, where it is parked during the day and overnight, the weather etc. Claying will remove most of the particles and contaminants that embed themselves in your paint (and the wax/sealant as Stufat says) the best way to tell when it needs claying again is to pop a thin polythene bag over your hand and run it over the paintwork after washing and drying. If you can feel roughness then it's time to clay again. The same is true during claying - sometimes one pass isn't enough.

Clays come in different grades e.g. B-H produce 'regular' firmer clay for paint that has never been clayed or for infrequent claying, and a softer clay for paint which is clayed regularly. If you want to clay regularly - or you simply love claying - buy softer clay which is less likely to mar the paint, although with adequate lubrication that shouldn't be a major worry whatever clay you use. Any car shampoo will be fine for making up the lube - I use zymol at the moment:)

I have used CG LubeR and first time it worked a treat straight out of the bottle.

Second time I used it i decided to dilute it 1:1 and it worked just as well.

Third time of using I diluted it down again with 2:1 and again worked well.

final use was last week, this time I diluted down to 4:1 and guess what......just as effective, even though manufacturer suggests it could be diluted 1:1 if desired it was still effective at 4:1

Conclusion: i'm not convinced this has anything in it thats worth the money (however im happy to be told im wrong) I shall be trying shampoo and water in future and saving some money. ;)

If I am claying a car that has had no detailing for ages then I use washing up liquid in a bucket of water. It removes all sorts of stuff that I want off anyway and lubes just fine.
I tend to pressure wash, snow foam, pressure wash, shampoo(washing up liquid), pressure wash and then shampoo again. Whilst this second shampoo (washing up liquid) is on I clay bar. Never had any problems and just wash over again as i go. Another shampoo and a pressure wash - it sounds a lot more than it actually is - and then the car is ready to work on.

I use autosmart reglaze.. its about ÂŁ13 and you can use a small amount of this with water to create a massive amount of clay lube. I also use this as a QD spray when tidying up water marks/polish dust with a microfibre cloth when the full job is done, its great stuff and will last you ages. If I buy a 1 litre at ÂŁ13 it lasts me well over a year. Depending on what I am detailing and how dirty it is I also add this to my bucket and snow foam to add an extra bit of glide as I find it helps lift off the grime (in winter I use twice as much as summer).

Hope this helps
